Councilmembers Krekorian and Park Seek to Align Vaccine Policy with Federal, County and LAUSD Governments 

 LOS ANGELES —  Council President Paul Krekorian and Councilmember Traci Park presented a motion on Wednesday exploring how the City of Los Angeles can align its vaccination directives with federal, county and LAUSD by repealing a 2021 law requiring vaccines for current and future city workers, as well as contractors. This motion will instruct the City Administrative Officer (CAO) with assistance of the city attorney to report back with feasibility, impact and timeline. 

"I support the motion to continue a deliberative process started by the Executive Employee Relations Committee to examine the safest way to lift vaccine mandates for City employees. We will remain vigilant as we work to ensure that our city employees are safe and healthy, and that Los Angeles City Hall continues to do the good work of the people of this City."

“This motion continues the process already underway in the Executive and Employee Relations Committee and its negotiations with the unions representing City employees,” said Council President Krekorian.  “A well-considered plan for lifting the mandate will be thoroughly discussed in Council, as it should be.”

Park highlighted in her motion, “Our action seeks to align City policy with our partners in the federal and county governments, as well as LAUSD. With hospitalization rates remaining low and other COVID-era policies having sunset, we have entered a new phase of our pandemic recovery.”

The council members pointed out significant policy shifts adopted by the County and Federal governments. The Biden-Harris administration ended its vaccination requirement for federal employees and contractors. By February 2023, the City of Los Angeles had removed its proof of vaccination  requirement for public building access. Additionally, both Los Angeles County's Department of Public Health and LAUSD adjusted their policies, eliminating their vaccination and mask mandates.

Councilwoman Park said, “We need a uniform strategy that eliminates public uncertainties. The evolving landscape necessitates a review and potential adjustment of our current policies.”

The motion was seconded by Councilmembers Kevin de Leon, John Lee, Heather Hutt, Curren Price and is headed to the Personnel, Audits and Hiring Committee.
